Description

The JW3302K is a small, handheld unit that provides 16 essential copper and fiber testing functions to support the FTTx deployment, acceptance testing, and daily maintenance processes. The JW3302K is a cost-effective tool to support both access networks and secondary backbone networks. Field technicians use the JW3302K to locate faults quickly, verify links accurately, and monitor PON signals. The SOR file can be transferred to a PC for analysis or reporting.

Core OTDR Capabilities

Using Rayleigh scattering and Fresnel reflections, the JW3302K measures the fiber length, attenuation, splice loss, and fault locations of a fiber. Auto OTDR mode requires only the selection of wavelength and test time. All other parameters are automatically selected for the user (i.e., optimal range, 5 ns–2μs pulse width, and averaging). In Expert Mode, you have complete control of the OTDR user parameters. You may adjust pulse width (5 ns for high resolution; up to 2μs for 60 km links), range (5 m–80 km), event thresholds (default = 0.25 dB), and IOR (Index of Refraction) settings for calculating the precise distance to each event.
The Event Map displays graphical representations of start points, splice locations, connector locations, macro-bends, splitter locations, and fiber ends. You can scroll through the events to view the distance, loss, and reflection values for each event. The total link length and loss are updated in real time. The X/Y zoom allows a detailed view of each event’s location. As part of acceptance testing, it is important to ensure that splice loss does not exceed the target of 0.2 dB.

Optical Power and Loss Testing

The 10G-PON Dual OPM measures both 1490 nm (EPON/GPON) and 1577 nm (XG-PON/XGS-PON) downlinks at the same time. It also uses WDM filtering to eliminate wavelength-to-wavelength crosstalk so that measurements are accurate. The standard OPM is designed for 800 to 1700 nm, with reference storage for calculating insertion losses.
The LS light source is stable and matches the OTDR wavelengths for CW operation or may be used with identification tones (270 Hz to 2 kHz). Passive devices are tested by connecting them to the OPM with a reference jumper, and the zero-dB reference is stored for future use when the device under test is inserted.

Visual Fault Location and End Checks

The VFL can be used to find fiber breaks, very tight bends, and problems with splice quality. The VFL sends out red light (650 nm at 10 mW) and is effective for bare fiber, patch cords, and short lengths of cable.
Connectors should be checked for contamination before being tested. When testing for ONT presence, ONU reflection detection is most effective when the length of the fiber drop exceeds the 3-meter blind zone.

RJ45 Network Cable Testing

The RJ45 Kit for Cat5e/6 cables measures cable length (up to 100 m), with TDR length measurement and a T568A/B test using the T568A/B remote identifier at the end of the cable.
The RJ45 Kit supports live PoE testing (up to 60 V DC) and tracks digital signals up to 300 m using the probe. The probe can distinguish tone frequency changes by distance, making it suitable for patch panels or low-voltage enclosures.

JW3302K OTDR Short Distance MeasurementMulti-Core Testing and File Management

Projects for ribbon cables are organized by project name and core count. Sequential testing of fiber cores turns green when the fibers have been tested and verified. Internal storage allows storage of over 200,000 OTDR traces. Storage can be further expanded with a TF (micro-SD) card, allowing for near infinite storage space. File transfer is done quickly via USB. The SOR file format is compatible with major industry software tools for analysis.

Build Quality and Power Management

Heavy-duty housing is designed to protect against drops during field use. The built-in flashlight illuminates manholes and cabinets where the tester may be needed. A rechargeable 4000 mAh battery can provide up to 12 hours of continuous operation per charge. USB-C power bank support allows continuous operation. Wireless charging (Qi, maximum of 10 W) is a convenient backup charging option. Use of auto-off timers and adjustable brightness settings can increase testing time. The operating temperature of the tester is -10°C to 50°C.

Safety Precautions

Do not look directly at the output of lasers or fiber tips. Class II lasers require the user to wear protective eyewear. There is a potential risk of damage to the internal components of the unit when testing live fiber that is not part of a service wavelength. Do not use any power supply other than the 5 V power supply specified for this unit. Make sure the unit remains dry. Only factory-authorized service should be used for repairs to ensure proper operation.
